Another year has flown by and what an amazing year it has been! We have pulled together a little list of tech trends to look out for in 2018. From all at Furthermore, Merry Christmas!
People are interacting with their phones as much as 80 times throughout the day. With the ever evolving capabilities of services on mobiles devices, our ability to dedicate quality time to real-world tasks is becoming difficult. Like a balancing act, our focus is constantly shifting from these real-world physical tasks to digital ones. Back in Autumn we looked at how we design with micro-moments in mind. We’ll be looking forward to seeing how services adapt to these short bursts in user activity.
Every week this year we’ve heard about a new startup blazing a trail by disrupting a traditional industry. ‘Everything as a Service’ (XaaS) has traditionally been associated with digital businesses but we’re seeing more conventional businesses disrupted by businesses that do not necessarily have a digital focus. From mobile petrol garages through to road-side bike repairs. Look out for more of these in 2018.
There are lots of scary stories in the press about how Robots are going to eventually destroy the human race. But never fear, the internet is literally bursting with clever people, from ethicists and philosophers through to lawyers and anthropologists, looking at how robots will interact with Humans. Its yet to be seen whether humour will help robots seem more ‘human’ or their ability to connect by recognising subtle changes in moods and vibes.
Imagine a world where we no longer have to worry about ANY mundane tasks, with the rise of virtual personal assistants. Tasks like writing a shopping list or jotting down an important date will become a thing of the past. Online grocery shopping is already huge, but how would you feel if food was delivered to you based on predictive algorithms and data from previous orders, offers you typically go for, even knowledge of your diary and family activity? One-click purchasing would become zero click and hassle free.
Well, it certainly raises a lot of questions about how all of this could impact society as a whole. Will we become even more disconnected from the real world? Or would it free up our time for hobbies, friends, relationships or even a non-virtual reality nature walk? ;) And what is the potential environmental and sustainability impact of such a future and as designers, users and makers, how should we help to mitigate this risk?
Let us know what you think by sending us an email and let’s continue the conversation . We look forward to catching-up with you in the New Year.
Seasons greetings!
